A few days ago, Google dropped the first Android P Developer Preview on us. The release is available for the first generation Google Pixel and Pixel XL as well as the second generation Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. There’s a lot of changes in the update, ranging from user interface revamps to quality of life enhancements. We’ve covered almost all of the visible changes in two separate articles, and while I personally think it’s a great update (apart from the Substratum fiasco), some of you might find it lacking. Thankfully, Magisk has now been updated to support the first P Developer Preview, which will hopefully open the floodgates of custom modifications.
After announcing the release of Magisk v16, many were worried that XDA Recognized Developer topjohnwu‘s absence would result in a period of SafetyNet failing or delayed Android P support. That hasn’t been the case, as the developer (and others such as Members shakalaca and worst working behind the scenes) has had some time to work on Magisk—quickly bringing root access to eager Google Pixel/Pixel XL and Pixel 2/Pixel 2 XL owners. SafetyNet passes on this build, of course, which means you should be able to use apps such as Google Pay while retaining root access.

With root access, you can start messing around with modifications such as the Pixel Launcher Mod or the Ambient Lock Screen Music app if you have the Pixel 2. This is only the beginning of what’s possible with root access, so be sure to visit our forums to find the best mods for your particular device.
