The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro was released in India in February alongside the Indian Redmi Note 5. Its list of specifications includes the Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 system-on-chip, 4GB/6GB of RAM paired with 64GB of storage, 6-inch Full HD+ (2160×1080) IPS display with an 18:9 aspect ratio, dual 12MP primary + 5MP secondary (depth sensing) cameras, 20MP front-facing camera, and a 4000mAh battery. In India, the phone shipped with MIUI 9 on top of Android 7.1 Nougat.
The Redmi Note 5 Pro was released in China as the Redmi Note 5 with an updated software version (Android 8.1 Oreo along with Project Treble support). The Chinese Redmi Note 5 is not the same as the Indian Redmi Note 5, as the Indian Redmi Note 5 is a re-branded version of the Chinese Redmi 5 Plus. It’s fair to say that the branding is confusing. The Indian Redmi Note 5 Pro and the Chinese Redmi Note 5 are code-named whyred, while the Indian Redmi Note 5 and Chinese Redmi 5 Plus are code-named vince.
The Redmi Note 5 Pro is already a popular device in India. In terms of development, it has received official TWRP support, and an unofficial release of LineageOS 14.1 (based on Android 7.1 Nougat) is also available, with nearly everything reported to be working. The upcoming Android 8.1 Oreo update for the device also contains Project Treble support. (A leaked Android Oreo-based MIUI Global ROM is available for the device.) This means that users can flash a generic system image (GSI) of Android Oreo.
Now, XDA Senior Member vasishath has released unofficial LineageOS 15.1 (based on Android 8.1 Oreo) for the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro. Nearly every feature is reportedly working, including features such as RIL, VoLTE, fingerprint sensor, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, camera, video recording, video playback, audio, flash, LED, sensors, and GPS.
The instructions to install the ROM are:
- Download the latest build and GApps (the developer recommends Open GApps).
- Reboot to recovery.
- Flash the latest ROM and GApps.
- Flash Magisk, and reboot.
